Chloe Eden
Give us a brief introduction about yourself. What inspired you to come to Monash Prato, and what have been the highlights of your experience so far?
My name is Chloe, and I spent my first semester in 2025 studying in Prato. I am in my fourth year of a Bachelor of Law and Arts. I had heard amazing things about Prato since my first day of university when my peer mentors told me I had to do it. I decided to come to Prato because I really wanted a change. I was really interested in the opportunity to come study in Italy, where I can meet new people and have exciting experiences that I couldn’t have in Melbourne. The highlights of my experience have been all the people I have met while here, and (of course) the food!
You took part in our cultural and social program. How did these experiences enhance your connection with the local community in Prato and enrich your understanding of Italy during your international study experience?
I loved the cultural and social program! I participated in all of the activities and I am so grateful I did. One of my favourite experiences was the cooking class at a local pizza restaurant. The class was so interesting because we learnt about the origins of the Neapolitan-style pizza they served, and how the margherita pizza was actually named after Queen Margherita of Italy! The apartment I stayed in whilst at Prato was also next to the pizza restaurant, so it became a really lovely connection to have in Prato. Every day when I walked past the restaurant, I would see the people who worked there and we would say ‘hi’ and they taught me a few new phrases in Italian. This connection never would have happened if not for Monash hosting the cooking class.
What’s next for you, and how do you think this experience will shape your future and promote your career?
I have a couple years left of my degree, but this experience has really opened my eyes to the opportunities available to me to have a career in Italy. It’s very easy in Australia, where we are relatively isolated from the rest of the world, to stay on the path that we see others take. Before coming to study here, I had never really thought about using my degree to practice as a lawyer globally.
However, one of my guest lecturers, a senior lawyer at an American law firm practicing in Italy (who studied at Monash), spoke to my class about the ins and outs of being a lawyer in Italy. I was very surprised to learn how much the knowledge I have attained from my Australian degree can be transferred to an international level. Prato has definitely changed my outlook on my future work and where I might choose to start my career.
What advice would you give to other students considering a study experience at Monash Prato?
Do it! I know everyone says it, but they’re right. I understand that the prospect of being overseas, especially if you don’t know anyone else going, can be really intimidating, but don’t wait for others to go. Everyone at Prato has been so welcoming and the community you build here is really special. The only other piece of advice I have is get onto your visa early!
