Research initiatives

For 25 years, Monash University, Prato campus has served as a hub for building and cultivating trusted relationships with European universities, research institutions, governments, and industry. Today, our campus is part of a transcontinental research ecosystem connecting Europe with Monash’s global research network across Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and beyond.

Through these connections, Monash researchers engage with European partners to develop impactful research collaborations, participate in international research networks, and address global challenges together. Our activities span interdisciplinary research, collaborative projects, research meetings, and conferences, bringing Monash’s expertise and global perspective into conversation with Europe.

The research developed through these collaborations contributes to leading international journals, academic publications, and other forms of knowledge exchange. Explore our research publications.

Monash University European Research Foundation ETS

The Monash University European Research Foundation ETS (MUERF) is co-located at our campus and provides an Italy-based platform for Monash’s engagement with European research and innovation.

MUERF enables Monash to work across all three pillars of Horizon Europe and supports the development of strategic research partnerships and collaborative projects with European institutions and industry. Its base in Italy combines direct European experience with access to Monash’s global research network, strengthening connections between Europe and the Indo-Pacific.

Together, Monash University, Prato campus and MUERF provide a platform for Monash researchers to build trusted European partnerships, develop collaborative research opportunities, and contribute to forward-looking international research initiatives.

Research themes and partnerships

Our research activities reflect areas of contemporary relevance to Europe, Prato, Tuscany and the wider world. These include migration, social inclusion and global movement studies, as well as climate change and energy transition, health and wellbeing, digital transformation, materials innovation and advanced manufacturing, and resilient democracies and inclusive societies.

We bring together expertise from across Monash’s faculties and global research network with the knowledge and experience of our European partners. By connecting European expertise with perspectives and capabilities from the Indo-Pacific, we create opportunities to co-create research and solutions with impact across regions.
